Masterclass: Simon Games

by SWS on 27-Jul-09 12:12

Simon Games talk us through what you need to know to get into games developing, and their unusual take on gaming.

The guys' top tips:

  • Keep it simple. In games, people need to understand what to do and how to do it. Also, as always, beautiful things are generally simple.
  • Collaborate. To be successful you'll need support, ideas, recommendations and opportunities. You can't get these on your own.
  • Build a community around what you do. Games need players and to make a good game you need to test. Lots. A community of fans, players or users provide a free testing resource, a fund of great ideas & feedback and help spread word about what you do.
  • Take good advice. There are loads of free or cheap business resources - Business Link, South West Screen, Bristol Media Group. Use them. All successful creatives be it film makers, painters or graphic designers are also good business people. Take this aspect of what you do seriously.
  • Be bold and dont be afraid to fail. Failing at something you put your all into is considerably less galling than missing an opportunity through lack of comitment. And remember self confidence is intoxicating and contagious.
  • Persevere. Making a living as a creative person is a priviledge. It is very competitive and only people who love what they do and believe in it succeed. If that is you, stick at it, you will get there in the end.
