South West Screen supported eight media companies from the region to attend MIP TV in Cannes this year.
By common consent the market was quieter than normal – although this is relative, MIP TV is still an enormous and important event with 8000+ international media execs in Cannes. That said there was plenty of business being done; in fact the production companies attending saw a positive change: “more purposeful”, “fewer timewasters”, were two comments. What had gone this year was some of the surrounding noise – tech company launches, post house presences, ostentatious parties – leaving a global market focused on international distribution.
There were some big names in attendance, including Burning Blue Media, Testimony Films, Touch Productions, Icon Films, Halo Films and Grizzly TV.
A key objective of SWS’s attendance was to progress initial discussions with the Singapore Media Development Authority. These talks went extremely well and we hope to have news of an exciting initiative later in the year. Watch this space.
Download the notes of interest from the panel sessions, which ran parallel to the MIP trade market. These sessions attracted a universally high quality of participant and provided interesting insight into models and practice in other countries.
