Animation is one of the most rapidly expanding areas of creative endeavour and technical development in the UK. Some of the more visible applications of 3D computer animation are seen in animated sequences in feature films and television, digital special effects in feature films, computer games, computer animated simulation rides and interactive virtual environments. The expansion of the market and the application areas of computer animation are predicted to continue an explosive growth well into the century.

Annecy International Animated Film Festival is the industry's leading competitive film festival, a must-do event for animation companies internationally. As if that wasn't enough, the Annecy Animated Film Market (MIFA) is also the perfect place for co-producing, buying, selling, and financing animation content across all platforms. In 2009 South West Screen, in partnership with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) headed up the UK delegation to the festival and market. We presented top British animation talent from 20 companies on a UK Animation stand, and provided a platform for companies to exhibit their innovative projects and ideas to the global marketplace. Among those visiting the UK exhibitors was CBBC; CBeebies; Nickeloden Germany; Gobelins School Paris; TV Loonland; Super RTL; Cake Entertainment; French Broadcaster TF1, YLE International and Nexus Productions.

As part of the support package offered, South West Screen organised a UK Breakfast Briefing where the UK companies could pitch their ideas and meet key international contacts. Over 150 delegates attended.
