Editing Craft Skills

Editing Craft Skills, 20-21 May 2010
2-day workshop + 2 months of online tutor support and online forum
Full cost: £800 (Skillset bursary may apply)

Are you great with Final Cut Pro, but need to develop or refine your own editing style? This will give you a solid grounding in good storytelling and editing craft.

A solid grounding in the principles of storytelling and narrative for experienced Post - Production crew. The course will also develop your skills to:

- Build narrative and mood in a sequence
- Make the best use of effects
- Consider narration, commentary and music
- Work effectively with a director to take an edit from rough cut to fine cut
- Understand offline/online or direct on-line workflow

This is a hands-on course designed to guide competent professional software operators on the journey to becoming skilled editors. This exploration of craft and technique will enable you to successfully take a project from a rough cut to the final cut, whilst developing your own cutting style in the process.

Course Delivery

Over two days you will explore and evaluate a range of editing styles and techniques across several genres. Strong emphasis will be placed on narrative structure. You will be presented with typical editing scenarios and challenges, and encouraged to apply new learning to develop and apply effective solutions. The workshop will also cover the issues involved in working with directors, responding to feedback, using effects and preparing deliverables.

Towards the end of the two-day intensive, you will be given an assignment by the tutor, which you will be supported through with further online guidance through tutorials, email and a dedicated user group over eight weeks. The project will be negotiated between you and the tutor, but will focus on you developing your editing voice and refining your storytelling techniques. The assignment can be written or delivered through a piece of editing work.

Pip has also taught and mentored upcoming editors on South West Screen’s highly successful Skillet-support ‘Second Post’ training programme.

These courses are accredited by Skillset as Skillset Media Academies' CPD Short Courses. Each course offers you the chance to get 20 credits at Master's level so, if you want, you can put a number together and gain a recognised, university accredited qualification:

• Three successful courses (60 credits) gives you a Postgraduate Certificate.
• Six successful courses (120 credits) gives you a Postgraduate Diploma.
• You can choose to take an additional 60-credit unit that will give you a full MA qualification.

Whilst these courses are accredited, you can choose to attend any of them to gain new knowledge and skills without submitting an assignment or working towards a qualification if you prefer. We understand that for many media professionals the academic award is less important than the opportunity to gain new knowledge and prepare for new challenges and opportunities, so you can choose to register for just one individual unit if desired.

South West Screen’s partner University College Falmouth is also running other Skillset-accredited short courses for professionals. See UCF’s website for details.

A list of other Skillset-accredited short courses for professionals across the UK is available on the Skillset website.
