The summer's here, which means school leavers, students and other hopefuls trying to get a foothold in the world of film, television and digital media are looking for work experience.
If that sounds like you, then here are our top tips to getting a week or two at some of the South West's creative media businesses.
Don't be afraid to pick up the phone
You'd be surprised at how receptive many companies are - especially when it comes to having an extra pair of hands around the place over during the summer. So pick up the phone - and it always sounds better if you do it yourself rather than get your mum & dad on the case. But, before you do...
Do your homework
Look on the company's website and make sure you know what they do and who to call. Have an idea about what you can offer the company and how you might be able to help.
Make a note
If you're not used to phone bashing, make some notes to help keep you on track when you make those all-important phone calls. Remember to mention: who you are, what work you are looking for, what experience you have (if any), why you have chosen this particular company (ie what you might be able to contribute).
Be positive!
A positive, polite and helpful phone manner goes a long way in making a good impression - and will show you are serious about getting your foot in the door. And if at first you don't succeed, stay positive! You might not get an offer straight away, but don't let that dent your confidence.
Lend a hand
If you are offered some work experience then make sure your positive attitude extends to turning up on time and lending a hand. In a week you probably won't get more than a taste of what the company does and how it feels to work there, but if you are keen and reliable you may well be asked to come back as an intern or freelancer and from there, the sky's the limit.
If you are looking for work experience take a look at our voluntary jobs page to see what's available right now.
Make sure you're aware of your rights when it comes to the definition of work experience - what is paid and unpaid work. Read the BECTU guidelines here.
