Eco-Doco - Community Documentary Scheme 2007

A Community Channel and South West Screen joint initiative

Please note: The deadline for applications to this scheme has now passed.

Through this South West Screen CommunityChannel and Available Light initiative we provided the opportunity for up to three directors based in the region each to make innovative half-hour TV broadcast documentary programmes about environmental issues within South West communities. We have commissioned the following three projects which are now in development:

  • Sue Fairbanks - Deadly Silent Cargo
About spent nuclear waste traveling through the English landscape, relying on luck in the way it is stored so that it doesn't leak. The British public has no idea that this is passing by so close to their homes, or few of us do.
  • Christopher Jones - The Big Green Gathering - Just a bunch of hippies or environmental pioneers?
This is about the shift of the green movement from the margins to the mainstream; how through history, these green people are now being proved right and are being courted by the political establishments that once pushed them aside.
  • Penny Evans - No title
Based in Knowle West in Bristol where the community has been living a green and sustainable life for a long time, making do and mending; catching local food; growing their own food; re-using and recycling long before it became a council initiative. The premise is that it is patronising to tell a community what to do to when the expertise lies within a community and when that community has its own ways of doing things, creating their own solutions. The documentary will be expressed through the voices of the community and the challenges they face building momentum to develop locally driven and relevant environmental projects.
