Workshops
Delegates will be split into four groups to undertake a hands-on workshop of their choice. Please note that the workshops are provisional and subject to confirmation and possible change.

  • Radiowaves - Radiowaves enables children and young people to become web-reporters and tell their story from their world in their way. Through the harnessing of young people's natural enthusiasm for using social networking and Web 2.0 technologies which are familiar to them, Radiowaves provide unique, safe platforms to connect with young people to engage them in compelling learning opportunities.

This workshop will give delegates a hands-on chance to make a pod-cast, upload video and examine the ways in which Radiowaves can be used to engage young people with online debates. Click here to see examples of work and find out more.
  • Voices, Stories and Campaigns - Knowle West Media Centre, (KWMC) who have a strong track record of working with both young people and adults to develop campaigns and effect change, will present this workshop. They are currently working with the Fire Service to promote community safety messages through social media and have worked extensively on health promotion. This session will feature young members of the archimedia group talking about how they worked to plan, fundraise and produce KWMC's new, state of the art eco-building. Click here to find out more about the group.

The session will also feature hands-on work whereby delegates will use video, photography and design to create content for a campaign of their choice. This workshop will replicate the techniques used by facilitators from Knowle West to develop participants' voices, ideas and points of view into media that can be understood and consumed by a wider audience.
  • Pervasive Media Workshop and Demo - Futurelab will be demonstrating Media Scapes created by local young people for use with PDA's (Personal Digital Assistants). Delegates will be invited to experience an interactive tour of the harbourside area around the conference venue, each with a very different story to tell about the history and geography of the space.

This workshop will be of particular interest to those interested in emerging technologies, pervasive media and the possible applications of these in educational environments. There will be media practitioners on hand from HP Labs Pervasive Media Studio to guide you through the experience. Be one of the first to experience the developing ideas that will form the media landscape of the future.

Create a Scape is a free resource developed by Futurelab and is aimed at use in an educational environment. More information and a link to download the software can be found here.
  • Have Your Say - Young People to be consulted on their views about lots of important things to do with media literacy! Young people attending Virtual Voices will be given a real chance to have their say on the big decisions being made by government and the people who advise them. The Institute for Public Policy research, who recently published an important report on young people and their use of the internet are very keen to make sure that all the things they are recommending to government have been checked out with young people themselves.

The workshop will be practical and interactive, facilitated by young citizen journalists, and will result in a set of short news reports that we will be using to talk to the press about these important questions and issues.
